The Year of the Dragonfly is an event in Don't Starve Together that began on February 8th, 2024. It is inspired by the Chinese Year of the Dragon, which starts on February 10th, 2024 and ends on February 28th, 2025. In the Chinese zodiac, each year is related to an animal in a 12-year cycle.

It is similar to the Year of the Gobbler, Year of the Varg, Year of the Pig King, Year of the Carrat, Year of the Beefalo, Year of the Catcoon and Year of the Bunnyman events, which came in the years before, and shares some mechanics with them, such as the Offerings crafting filter, and most crafted items from those events. However, there are several additions and differences to be implemented into this event. Players can revisit this event by setting Events to Year of the Dragonfly in the World Customization menu.

It might like a piece of charcoal.

The Dragonfly Shrine is a craftable Structure located in the Prototypers & Stations Filter, Structures Filter and Special Event Filter, and requires 4 Gold Nuggets and 2 Boards to craft. It is always available to craft and does not require prototyping.

Offering a Charcoal to the Dragonfly Shrine will grant players access to the Offerings Filter where they are able to acquire event-specific items using Gold Nuggets or Lucky Gold Nuggets.

Items can be obtained from the Offerings Filter when standing next to an activated Dragonfly Shrine, each of them having a different function. These items cannot be prototyped; in order to craft an item under this filter, the player must always be near a Shrine.

The following items can be crafted only at the Dragonfly Shrine:

The following items were introduced in previous New Year events and can be crafted both at the Dragonfly Shrine and all other Lunar New Year shrines:

Boat Race[]

The Boat Race is a mini game where the players can make a race with their Dragonfly Boats to win Red Pouches. This can be done with other players or against a shadow competitor, if there aren't any other players around.

Start Tower[]

Where to start?

You have to start somewhere.

Wilson, examining a Start Tower

The Start Tower Kit can be acquired in exchange for 3 Gold Nuggets at the Dragonfly Shrine. It can be deployed into a Start Tower when tossing it into the Ocean. Doing so will also generate 3 Race Checkpoints at random spots.

Activating the Start Tower will start a countdown, at which end all Dragonfly Boats in the marked starting area will get a random colored arrow sytem on their deck, pointing to the next Race Checkpoint. If there aren't any other players in the starting area, a Boat with a shadow competitor in the shape of a Prime Mate called Charlies Racer will spawn. After reaching all checkpoints with the boat, the competitors have to return to the Start Tower. As soon as the first competitor reaches it, the Start Tower will begin the ending countdown. The winner will receive the most Red Pouches, while the other competitors who manage to complete the race within the countdown will receive less or none Red Pouches[Verification Needed].

Race Checkpoint[]

There's the checkpoint!

The Race Checkpoint Kit can be acquired in exchange for 2 Lucky Gold Nuggets at the Dragonfly Shrine. It can be deployed into a Race Checkpoint by tossing it into the ocean.

It is used to make the boat race longer, also giving the possibility to create longer paths. During a race the arrow on the boat will point to the next Checkpoint. After reaching it, a ribbon in the color of the boat's arrow will appear hanging from the Checkpoint.

The Race Checkpoint can be hammered to turn it back into a Race Checkpoint Kit.

The Dragonfly Boat works like the normal Boat, just having a smaller size. At the start of a Boat Race, it will receive an arrow system in a random color in the middle of its deck.

Claw Oar[]

The Claw Oar can be acquired in exchange for 1 Gold Nugget at the Dragonfly Shrine. It can be used to move a Dragonfly Boat across the Ocean and acts like a Driftwood Oar. Failing at rowing with a Claw Oar will also increase the player's Wetness by 9 Wetness Meter and reduce its durability by 25 uses.

The Fanged Bumper Kit can be acquired in exchange for 3 Lucky Gold Nuggets at the Dragonfly Shrine. It can be installed as a Fanged Bumper at the border of a boat. It has 40 durability, which provides a protection for the boat from collision damage. If it is damaged and not destroyed, it can be repaired with Twigs.

Golden Buoy[]

Wolfgang, examining a Golden Buoy

The Golden Buoy Kit can be acquired in exchange for 2 Lucky Gold Nuggets at the Dragonfly Shrine. It can be deployed into a Golden Buoy when tossing it into the Ocean. It acts as an obstacle during a boat race. When a boat is hitting a Golden Buoy, the boat and the buoy will bounce back. It can be attacked with the hands or any weapon to get the kit back; this takes 2-3 hits.

Thorny Buoy[]

The Thorny Buoy acts the same as the Golden Buoy, but it cannot be crafted by the players. Instead it is used by Charlie's Racer. When it get destroyed, it disappears and won't drop a kit.

Placeholder Trivia[]

  • The Thorny Buoy also has a kit, that can be spawned via Console commands, but tossing it into the water will just make it disappear. However, the Thorny Buoy can be spawned directly using commands.
