Year of the Beefalo is an event in Don't Starve Together that began in February 4th, 2021. It is inspired by the Chinese Year of the Ox, which starts on February 12, 2021 and ends on January 31, 2022. In the Chinese zodiac, each year is related to an animal in a 12-year cycle.

It is similar to the Year of the Gobbler, Year of the Varg, Year of the Pig King, and Year of the Carrat events, which came in the years before, and shares mechanics with them, such as the Offerings crafting filter, and most crafted items from those events. However, there are several additions and differences to be implemented into this event. Players can revisit this event by setting Events to Year of the Beefalo in the World Customization menu.

During the official Year of the Beefalo event, the Festive Saddle Skin was given to players upon opening the game.

The Beefalo Shrine is a crafted Structure located in the Prototypers & Stations Filter, Structures Filter and Special Event Filter, and requires 8 Gold Nuggets and 2 Boards to craft. It is always available to craft and does not require prototyping.

Offering a Beefalo Wool to the Beefalo Shrine will grant players access to the Offerings Filter where they are able to acquire event-specific items using Lucky Gold Nuggets.

Items can be obtained from the Offerings Filter when standing next to an activated Beefalo Shrine, each of them having a different function. These items cannot be prototyped; in order to craft an item under this filter, the player must always be near a Beefalo Shrine.

The following items can be crafted only at the Beefalo Shrine:

The following items were introduced in previous New Year events and are crafted at the Beefalo Shrine:

Beefalo Pageant[]

Competing in a Beefalo Pageant is the only method of obtaining Lucky Gold Nuggets during the event. It can be initiated by hitching a Beefalo at a Beefalo Stage and talking to the judge at the Judge's Booth during the day. Only one contest can occur each day. You need at least 4 beefalo stages to start the pageant. If there are not enough players to Beefalo Stages, the extra stages will be occupied with Merm and Pig competitors with their own Beefalo. To initiate a pageant, all participating players have to hitch their beefalo to a Beefalo Stage. Beefalo cannot be hitched to anything if they are in heat. Once all participating beefalos are hitched, a player has to activate the Judge's Booth.

Once the contest begins, the Judge will tell the contestants what kind of beefalo he is looking for to be the winner. Then, the players choose the beefalo they believe matches the Judge's criteria. They only have a set amount of time to choose. Players choose by clicking on the beefalo or beefalo's stage, which places a ribbon. The choice is not set until the timer ends, so players are free to make multiple attempts to choose, but can only choose one.

After the players choose the beefalo they think will win, the Judge will go through the winners starting from third place up to first. The player wins a large Red Pouch if they choose the first place beefalo. Players who do not win will receive a small Red Pouch. The Judge will also give out Pattern Scraps, the amount of which matching the total amount of participants.

Beefalo Bell[]

The Beefalo Bell is crafted from the Offerings Filter with three Gold Nuggets and one Flint. It is used to bond with a beefalo by hovering the bell over it, then clicking the right mouse button. Players can name the Beefalo by either typing it in or choosing one of various names by clicking the Random button. Bonded Beefalos will follow the player unless the player aggravates them, even when untamed. A player may only be bonded with one Beefalo at a time. The player can break the bond by left-clicking the bell.

Pattern Scraps[]

Walter Portrait

Walter

Pattern Scraps can be acquired in exchange for 5 Lucky Gold Nuggets in the Offerings Filter. Also, random scraps are given out by the Judge after a Beefalo pageant. There are three types: Fearsome, Formal And Festive. They are to be put into a Sewing Machine in various combinations to produce Costume Patterns. If the scrap combination is invalid, the machine will return all the scraps placed inside. The following table shows the possible valid combinations.

Pattern Scrap Combinations
Resulting Costume
Formal Formal Formal Formal Costume Pattern
Festive Festive Festive Festive Costume Pattern
Fearsome Fearsome Fearsome Ironclad Costume Pattern
Formal Formal Festive Dolled-Up Costume Pattern
Formal Formal Fearsome No Result
Festive Festive Formal Flowery Costume Pattern
Festive Festive Fearsome Lucky Beast Costume Pattern
Fearsome Fearsome Formal Warrior Costume Pattern
Fearsome Fearsome Festive Frostbitten Costume Pattern
Formal Festive Fearsome Victorian Costume Pattern

Costume Patterns[]

Costume Patterns operate similarly to Blueprints. The player can right click on the Pattern to learn a new set of Beefalo Skins, as well as produce one Beefalo Doll wearing the matching skin set. New Patterns learned will make a pop-up appear in the upper-left corner of the screen, in a similar manner to the pop-up that notifies players of an in-game skin drop. The player can still right-click patterns even after learning them to continue acquiring Beefalo Dolls.

The Beefalo Skins can be accessed at the Grooming Station. The skin selection screen is the same as the Wardrobe. For instance, Skin presets can be saved.

Beefalo Skins differ from other skins in that they are not found in the Curio Cabinet. They are only accessible in-game, and are not remembered across games; they have to be re-learned in each game like other tiered crafts. All Beefalo Skins are of the exclusive Complimentary rarity. They cannot be bought with real monies, woven, traded, or sold on the Marketplace.

Beefalo Dolls[]

Wilson

When a Pattern is learned, a Beefalo Doll will spawn. The type of Beefalo Doll depends on the type of Pattern learned. Beefalo Dolls can be appraised by the Judge, which will provide clues as to what style of Beefalo will win that day.

Beefalo Figure Sketch[]

Wickerbottom Portrait

Wickerbottom

Beefalo Figure Sketches can be acquired at the Beefalo Shrine in exchange for 8 Lucky Gold Nuggets. They can then be given to a Potter's Wheel to be able to sculpt Beefalo Figures.

Beefalo Figure[]

The Beefalo Figure can be crafted from the Sculptures Filter after acquiring its Sketch from the Beefalo Shrine and giving it to a Potter's Wheel. Depending on whether the player chooses to place 1 Marble, 1 Cut Stone or 1 Moon Shard on the wheel before sculpting, the resulting Figure will be white, black or translucent green.

Similar to Chess Pieces, Beefalo Figure can be carried around on the players' backs and can be used for decorational purposes.

Placeholder Trivia[]

  • The song that plays while players choose a beefalo is a musical reference to the song "Think!" from the show Jeopardy!. This is compounded by the naming of the sound file, which includes the words "WlexWrebek", a reference to the late Jeopardy! host Alex Trebek.
  • The line "Well well well, lemme get a look at the menagerie." is likely a reference to one of Spinel's lines from Steven Universe: The Movie.
  • If you enable this event on DST servers now, there will be no such thing as Beefalo Grooming Station KIt
