Wetness Meter

The 'Wetness' meter

Wetness is a game mechanic found in the Reign of Giants DLC. Whenever it rains, a small meter will appear showing the player's current 'wetness'. If a player becomes too wet (usually 60 wetness points), items will become slippery, clothing will drain sanity, and they will begin to freeze.

Wet Items

The wetness of an item depends on the wetness of the world, not of the player. An items wetness is seen by a blue outline around it in the inventory. An item can be kept dry by being stored in a container, such as a chest. Items can also be dried faster by placing them next to a fire. Items that become wet will become titled 'Wet X', where X is the item name. The text also becomes blue.

If the player holds a wet item or wears it, it will drain sanity. If the item is a sanity-gaining item, such as a Garland, it may become a hindrance, due to the drain from the 'Wet' status being greater than the gain.

Items that burn, such as Logs, that get Wet will be reduced in their burn time. Fires also go out in shorter periods.

Ice melting in the inventory will increase wetness.

If a tool, such as an axe, becomes wet, there is a chance the tool will slip out of the player's hand when used.

Survival

Wetness lowers the thermal sensation of the player. At maximum wetness, the ambient temperature is perceived to be 30 degrees lower, and proportionally for other values (for example, at half wetness the temperature is perceived to be 15 degrees lower). If the perceived temperature falls below 0 degrees, the player begins to freeze. For tips on surviving Freezing, please go to the appropriate page.

The player can dry themselves out faster by standing next to a fire. The rate of wetness can also be decreased, but not stopped, by standing under a tree. This will decrease the amount of time waiting to lose the 'Wet' status.

A Pretty Parasol is an early game item that functions similar to the Umbrella. It will reduce the amount of wetness received while it is raining by 50%. Wearing almost any hat provides an additional 20% wetness resistance. A Rain Hat and a Rain Coat can also be worn, which are both very effective at reducing wetness.  Standing underneath any kind of tree  will also provide some protection from the rain.

Trivia

  • Unlike the other four meters that have an icon that starts to look depleted over time (stomach, heart, brain, log), the drop of water on the wetness meter will look the same no matter how wet the player is. It is also the only icon that fills after time instead of draining.
  • When the wetness meter comes up, it makes a drop sound. When it dissapears, it makes a warping sound.
