The Thulecite Medallion is an item that can be crafted from an unrepaired Ancient Altar. Its purpose is to gauge the current state of the Ruins' magical flux, a periodic event in the Ruins where objects glow red and Shadow Creatures spawn. The Thulecite Medallion will glow a reddish color when the magic state is high, and examination of it will provide further details about whether it is becoming more magical, becoming less magical, or staying steady.
By its color, one can determine when the nightmare phase is about to start - a periodic event in ruins, when all the statues and the lights begin to glow a red color, and around them, Crawling Nightmares and Nightmarebeaks spawn, the Ruins equivalent to Shadow Creatures. Unlike normal Crawling Horrors and Terrorbeaks, your sanity does not affect whether or not they can attack or detect you.
