  • For those who need to know about the tool: http://dont-starve-game.wikia.com/wiki/Pick/Axe

    The title says it all.

    But to expand:

I was wondering if it's economical using such a tool when it costs two luxury tools PLUS two (non-renewable) Thulecite (and the luxury axe is usable 400 times and luxury  pickaxe 133 times  compared to [if used only in the one tool for its durability] 230 and 77 for axe/pickaxe respectively) as the Pick/Axe?

But if there is something better than the one space it saves, do enlighten us as to its better than carrying the luxury axe and pickaxe.

      Loading editor
    • Well looks like luxury ones are durable enough to do their job...However the pick/axe is 2 in 1...A big advantage...Also Its durability is good enough as well..

What I am trying to say is that the pick/axe is more a misc like item and I would personally keep it for later...

        Loading editor
    • I'd never crafted it since i did not go in ruins in update, but i would equip it in caves, on a trip, if i take alot of grass, so yeah, the luxury axe has 400 uses, the multitool  has 230 uses, thats its pro, plus it has minor advantage, makes you mine faster and chop faster.

I would not want to carry like 2 opulent pickaxes and 2 luxury axes.

You could just carry one of each, and then make a new one when they break. It's not like it's hard to find gold in caves, plus they'll last almost twice as long as the pick/axe.

The faster chopping/mining is good, but does that make up for the crappy durability? If you use it to chop trees for example, say large evergreen takes 15 chops normally, so 12 with the pick/axe. So with a golden axe you'd be able to chop 26 trees before it breaks, whereas with the pick/axe you'd only be able to chop 19. That 7 trees difference (or whatever the difference is with mining - assume it's similar) makes it not worth it IMO.

They need to up the durability on this thing, at least so that you can chop/mine the same amount of things with it as the separate luxury versions. So for the "axe" it would need to be around 312 uses before breaking.

I dont really like to waste it on the non-renewable thulecite, but if it had 312 uses or more, i would make it, and i dont carry golden nuggets around.

    • I don't "carry them around" either, unless I find them since gold is always useful, even though it's easy enough to obtain. Can always stick it in chester (I hope they eventually fix that freaky double-chester thing - I hate having Chester magically change between the outside world and the caves).

But yeah, 312 for the axe + whatever it needs for pickaxe usage to make it even with the golden pickaxe, and it makes perfect sense to craft. As it is now, the extra space isn't enough incentive to waste non-renewable Thulecite (or however that's spelt).

I agree...why to spend your thulecite when you have 1 chest full of gold nuggets?

Technically I was the one being more verbose, but I did put in calculations based on how many things you can chop with it. Since the pick/axe takes less chops, I thought that could make up for it.

It doesn't though, so I agree with you - unless they fix it...

    • Usually I don't go mining and chopping wood at the same time, but when I do, I take an axe and a pickaxe. Pick/axe needs a buff.

It already has one...It can do the job of 2 tools at the same time with amazing durability and it saves you 1 slot..

I think he means a better buff. It needs more durability to make it worthwhile - I definitely wouldn't say it has "amazing" durability, since it has less durability than the two golden tools needed to craft it.

it has 230 durabillity, luxury axe has 400 durability, opulent pickaxe has 200-100 durability.

    • What Roud72 said above should make it pretty obvious it is NOT awesome. Also see my calculations in the massive wall of text ^^ up there somewhere ^^ - it's clear you lose out even though it takes less hits to chop a tree (for example).

So while the "effective durability" is actually better than 230 for tree chopping, it's still worse than the luxury axe.

Saving one extra unit of space doesn't cut it for me I'm afraid.

    • Yeah, until it either gets more durability or more features, it's just not worth saving a slot and losing the greater durability of the luxury  axe and luxury pickaxe for the cost of a non-renewable resource that is rare to quite rare to get in the first place (Thulecite) And thanks all for the discussion *hands out Pumpkin Cookies *

Well I can't agree yet because I haven't built it yet, which is because I can't be arsed going into the Ruins, which in turn is because I normally can't be arsed going into the caves - except maybe to grab some lightbulbs to make a lantern, only to then realise that the only reason I'd need a lantern in the first place is to go into the caves, but by the time I build one I've crafted so much decent stuff above-ground that I can't be bothered actually going back below ground.

Though one day I'll do it just to craft one of those Horny Deerclops sentry guns. Maybe.
