  • Since Klei has completely changed the UI for DST, we can no longer acquire skin icons like the one on the right. These were screenshots from the in-game inventory, all very inconsistently cropped and aligned in different sizes.

This would be a chance to replace them. As Klei may change the UI again, my suggestion would be to take the icons from the Steam inventory instead, as their UI seems more stable. The highest resolution I could obtain is 98x98px by taking a screenshot of my own inventory (with the colored frame indicating the rarity).

This could be a first baby-step into completing our Skins page or least make that a possibility. It really needs some work.

Please let me know what you think. ;)

    • Its a good idea. More stable. But it may use up some money.. rose skins have just came out and boy they are expensive

    • Very Symbol strong support vote.png Strongly support

The one problem is, as DatShadow said, unless others contribute regularly, which hasn't worked out that well in the past, things will get quite expensive.

One solution is using the community market's icons themselves. The list previews are 62x62, which is quite small, and the checkout previews are 360x360, which is quite large, and both have a transparent background.

Here's a preview of both to the right. List icon is full size. Checkout icon is resized to 250x250.

Another would be...using this thread from the forums. I do admit it does a better job than our incomplete page.

      What do you think?

    • I condensed my long post into a pros/cons list:

      Community Market list icons (62px)

      Pros:

      • a lovely transparent background
      • easy to obtain

      Cons:

      • too small
      • not complete at all, missing:
        • All new Forge and Winter's Feast event skins which can be unraveled into Spools because they are not marketable
        • All Proof of Purchase, Loyal and Timeless items, including Rewards and Redeems
        • All Skins given to everyone for a limited time of an event, e.g. Gingerbread Chest

      Community Market checkout previews (360px)

      Pros:

      • quite large
      • transparent background
      • easy to obtain

      Cons:

      • huge decorative frame that probably wouldn't help the page's layout
      • not complete at all, for same reasons as list icons

      Steam Inventory icons (96px)

      Pros:

      • Almost complete, only missing:
        • All Skins given to everyone for a limited time of an event, e.g. Gingerbread Chest
      • Reasonable size
      • Transparent background possible (by opening Steam in browser and accessing source link, see here)

      Cons:

      • Maybe still too small
      • Harder to obtain (but not necessarily expensive, see below)

For the problem mentioned by DatShadowJK, I have found a solution, albeit a stalky one. You don't have to obtain all the skins yourself, you just need to know someone who has them. By browsing through my Steam friends' inventories, I could already gather a complete set of Guest of Honor set. It's a bit detective work, but it's actually quite fun. :D

TLDR: There is no perfect solution, but I'd still go for Steam inventory icons with transparent backgrounds, because they offer the most complete option.

    • I do admit that the technique is a bit sneaky ;), but it sounds good nonetheless. I have some skins in my inventory that you can check

    • Sounds nice. I'll add a few more when I have time. Currently, I'll call them by their color followed by their name, but if you feel like adding "Icon" afterwards (e.g. Ghost White Cardigan.png to Ghost White Cardigan Icon.png), let me know, and I'll change it.

    • Thanks for your support, DatShadowJK, SpikeGuy (aka fastest editor)! ;) If Deiaa is also okay with it, we can start replacing the old images with the new ones. There is no need to keep the old ones, right?

Symbol support vote.png Support for adding an "Icon" at the end of each name. If done consistently, that would be quite helpful.

If someone needs help extracting the images, I've found a way to do it in Firefox.

    • If I get any skins for myself, I think I'll put them there if they aren't there

    • Symbol support vote.png Support I'd go for the Steam Inventory icons as well. Sounds like the best solution, and I see you guys already got to work on it!

I won't be able to participate in gathering the images very effectively due to exams and real-life business, but I'll get to work on it if I get a chance (assuming I get one before it's all done that is...).

    • Symbol support vote.png Support the Steam inventory as well.

Same as Deiaa I can't help much though (I'm still too busy with RL to help right now though I hope to be back one day still).

    • Has anyone tried to extract the skins from the game files?

data/anim/dynamic in my installation has ~100MB, has a bunch of things I know I don't have and haven't seen on a server. Can anyone name a skin from a past event which currently isn't available? I'm guessing the past skins should be there too, as things like chests don't change after the event ends, AFAIK.

    • I have to admit that I have no idea on how to access a .dyn file. I always thought Klei specifically choose that file format to prevent people from accessing the files and making mods containing the regular skins.

    • Symbol support vote.png Support Use the steam inventory icons, not the steam market ones. As for event skins; they are now unlockable so we don't need to worry about that. Hallowed Nights, Winter Frock/Coat and Chest are all drops now.
