It can take down both creatures and trees. You can upgrade its stats, life steal and hunger, by defeating giants. The weapon has 3 levels, and each level requires 3 giant kills to progress.

The Shadow Maul is a weapon item exclusive to Don't Starve Together, introduced in the From Beyond updates. It can be crafted at the Shadowcraft Plinth, requiring a Possessed Shadow Atrium, 5 Pure Horror, 3 Dreadstone, and 2 Dark Tatters.

Usage

The Shadow Maul can be used as an Axe with 150% efficiency.

When used as a weapon, the Shadow Maul deals 38 damage, 10 Planar Damage, and additional 10% damage against Lunar Aligned mobs. With an equipped Void Cowl, it deals additional 10% damage and +5 planar damage. Furthermore, the Void Cowl increases the planar damage by 4 on every hit, stackable up to 6 times, for a total of 24 additional damage after 6 consecutive hits. At this point, the total damage of the Shadow Maul will be 80.8. The bonus disappears if the character removes the Void Cowl, does not attack for 3 seconds, or gets hit.

Leveling

The Shadow Maul can level up to 3 stages. To level up to the next stage, 3 Bosses have to be killed with it. The kill will count if the Shadow Maul is used within five seconds of the boss's death.

Leveling up increases its Planar Damage and Chopping Efficiency. When the Shadow Maul levels up, it will start to drain its hunger, starting from 500; the rate of hunger drain is increased with every Stage. Also, it will start to talk to the player, like Lucy the Axe.

Whenever the Shadow Maul is used to kill a mob, its hunger is restored by 50. When its hunger reaches 0, it will start to lose durability. Once the Durability drops to 0, the Shadow Maul will break without disappearing and reset to stage 0. It can be repaired with a Void Repair Kit.

Every attack with a leveled Shadow Maul restores a small amount of the character's health, while losing the amount of sanity equal to 50% of the restored health.

When Maxwell equips the Shadow Maul, his Shadow Duelist will receive the tier 3 buff.
