Salt Crystals are an Item exclusive to Don't Starve Together, introduced in Return of Them. They are dropped by destroyed or mined Salt Formations found in the Ocean. Salt Crystals are required to craft the Salt Box. Three Salt Crystals can also be ground into two Seasoning Salt spices by Warly using the Portable Grinding Mill.
Salt Crystals can be used to add 50% freshness to perishable Foods (up to a maximum of 100% freshness). If used on a stack of Food, the effect is divided by the size of the stack such that 5 foods of 45% freshness would become 55% freshness (50 / 5 = 10 freshness each). Salt Crystals can only be used on food items that can be put in a Salt Box.

Salt Crystals were initially introduced in The Gorge event. In this event, in order to receive Salt Crystals, one must install a Salt Rack at a Salt Pond and wait two minutes until it is ready to be harvested. Once the time is up, Salt Crystals will appear out of the pond and can then be harvested, resulting in a Salt Crystal which can be ground up with the Mealing Stone, granting the player three Salt.
Salt is very useful as it can be used to extend the freshness of cooked meals while also increasing the value of the food item that is given to the Gnaw. In addition, three Salt can be traded with the Swamp Pig Elder for a Key.
