Sails are craftable Nautical items introduced in Don't Starve: Shipwrecked. Their purpose is to give a speed bonus to Boats and keep players' hands free while sailing, allowing them to hold items like Tools Tab, Weapons, and hand-held Light sources. Using a Sewing Kit on any variety of Sail repairs 100% of its durability.

Thatch Sail

Compared to other sails, the Tatch Sail has the lowest speed boost and lowest durability. However, it can be crafted at a Science Machine, and is relatively inexpensive compared to the others. However, once an Alchemy Engine is available it is desirable to move on to the other choices available.

Cloth Sail

Compared to the other sails, the Cloth Sail offers a relatively high speed boost, but has middling durability. It is best suited to short-middling length voyages at sea, allowing you to quickly get from location to location wasting as little time as possible. It can be crafted at a Alchemy Engine.

Snakeskin Sail

The Snakeskin Sail has the highest durability out of all four of the sails. However, its speed is middling between the Thatch Sail and the Cloth Sail. Therefore, it is best suited for long voyages at sea where the player will have limited access to supplies. It can be crafted at a Alchemy Engine.

Feather Lite Sail

Compared to other sails, the Feather Lite Sail has the highest speed boost, but shares the lowest durability with the Thatch Sail. Paired with the rarity of Doydoies it isn't pracical to rely on these alone, saving them for emergencies. It can be crafted at a Science Machine (unlike the Cloth Sail and the Snakeskin Sail).
