A single Prime Mate paddles the Pirate Sloop while the Powder Monkeys raid the player's boat. He wears a Captain's Tricorn on his head, which allows his boat to take half damage from collisions. Prime Mates will attack anyone except Monkeys (or Wonkey) who steps on their boat, or comes near enough to it. Unlike the Powder Monkeys, they will not leave their own boat unless it is about to sink, at which point, they cannonball-dive into the water and are gone.

The name "Prime Mate" is a pun on word "primate", and the term "first mate", a position on ship crews.
