Eerie and yet beautiful.

Wendy

The Night Light  (not to be confused with Maxwell's Light) is a Magic structure item in-game. It costs 8 Gold Nuggets, 2 Nightmare Fuel, and a Red Gem to craft.

The Night Light works like a Campfire, but can only be fueled by Nightmare Fuel. Charging 1 Nightmare Fuel provides light for 175 seconds.

Standing next to the Night Light while it's burning lowers the player's sanity by 3 per minute. The player can avoid this sanity drain by standing some distance away. If the player is near the Night Light at dusk or night, the total sanity drain will rise to 8 points per minute.

Placeholder Trivia

  • The Night Light was added in the Insanity update.
  • The Night Light will not give off heat like a regular Fire, meaning it will not keep you from freezing. This also means it does not cause overheating, making it slightly useful during Summer in Reign of Giants.
  • It takes three Nightmare Fuel in order for the Night Light to give its maximum light output.
  • Night Light has been continually rated as the "Most Useless Item Ever" in the Don't Starve community, as its high cost vastly outweighs any practical benefits it may have. As such, they are generally only constructed for aesthetic appeal, and even then only by gamers overflowing with resources who are bored.
  • While being fairly useless above-ground, Night Lights are useful in the Ruins, where light is needed and nightmare fuel is plentiful.
  • In the older versions of Don't Starve, they shared models with Maxwell's Light.
  • The Night Light's ghastly flames can still be affected by Night Hands.
