The Mast is a craftable Item exclusive to Don't Starve Together, and introduced in Return of Them. It is found in the Seafaring Tab, requires 3 Boards, 3 Ropes and 8 Silk to craft, and a Think Tank to prototype.
To raise the sail efficiently, the player should hover their mouse over the Mast with an open sail and wait for the text to say "Heave!". Clicking on the Mast at this time will have the character raise the Mast halfway. The text will change to "Ho!", and once the player clicks the Mast again, the sail will be closed completely. If the player clicks the Mast before or after these text prompts, the character will struggle and it will take longer to close the sail. This applies to the Winged Sail as well.
The Winged Sail is a craftable Item exclusive to Don't Starve Together. It is found in the Seafaring Tab, requires 3 Driftwood Piece, 3 Ropes and 4 Feathery Canvas to craft. Upon death, the Malbatross also drops the Rare Blueprint that is necessary to prototype this item.
The Winged Sail item can be deployed on a Boat. Its sail can then be raised to allow players to sail the Boat. Winged Sails take more time be deployed than normal Masts, but they can be retracted much faster, allowing the boat to stop more easily. Winged Sails apply a stronger force than normal Masts, but turn at the same speed.
In the beta of Return of Them, Winged Sails can be upgraded with a Deck Illuminator or a Lightning Conductor.
A lowered Mast increases the maximum velocity of a Boat by 1.5, and a raised Winged Sail increases the speed by 3. Each other successive mast is 30% less effective than the previous (Winged Sail effects apply first). The final maximum speed is bounded between 1 (without mast) and 5. The following table gives some examples:
Note that the base speed is 0, which is raised to 1 by the bound.
- The Mast was introduced in the Turn of Tides update.
- The Winged Sail was introduced in the Salty Dog beta update.
