–Wurt
Koalefant is a neutral Animal that can spawn at the end of Suspicious Dirt Pile tracks. Upon death, it drops 8 Meat and a Koalefant Trunk, which can be used to craft a Breezy Vest. If killed with fire, the loot will be replaced with 8 Cooked Meat and one Ashes. If left alive, they drop Manure periodically, similar to Beefalo.
Once spawned, it will actively avoid the player until attacked, at which point the animal will become hostile and give chase for a distance. If there are multiple Koalefants on screen, all of them will aggro on the attacker.
Although considered a neutral Mob, killing it does not affect Naughtiness.
Winter Koalefant
–Wurt
During Winter, Koalefant is replaced by Winter Koalefant, which has a seasonally appropriate color change. Upon death, it drops 8 Meat and a Winter Koalefant Trunk, which can be used to craft a Puffy Vest.
A Koalefant that spawned before the season change will remain normal during Winter; however, should tracks be found before and followed during Winter, a Winter Koalefant will be found.

Koalefants can be discovered by investigating Suspicious Dirt Piles that randomly spawn nearby; it will change locations if ignored for a period of time. Once examined, it is replaced by a footprint pointing to another pile approximately two screens away.
Occasionally while uncovering tracks, the footprint will not appear and the character will announce the end of the trail; though another Suspicious Dirt Pile may spawn again. The animal will also be lost if the player ignores a track, causing the footprint to slowly fade away.
Upon uncovering the final footprint (there can be 6-12 per hunt), the character will say the creature is close and a Koalefant will spawn. It will remain in the world until killed, regardless of Seasons.
There is a chance a Suspicious Dirt Pile will lead to a Ewecus instead.
Combat
Using a ranged weapon (e.g. Boomerang, Darts) is the easiest way to initiate a fight, but the animal can also be cornered (see Tips) and struck with a melee weapon to engage. After being angered, the Koalefant will attempt to close distance with the attacker and strikes with the same timing as a Beefalo, although with more damage. A player can safely kite one with an attack pattern of 5-6 swings depending on movement speed.
Below is the number of hits it takes with each weapon to kill a Koalefant (may be affected by some characters' damage modifiers). The Weather Pain is not included due to the random nature of its projectile.

In the Reign of Giants (RoG) DLC, a trail might lead to a Varg instead of a Koalefant or Ewecus. The chance gradually increases to 16.5% by day 100. It is impossible to tell which animal will be found beforehand.
When tracking in or shortly after Rain, there is a chance the next track will not appear. If this happens, the character will comment that the wet ground cannot sustain tracks.
Tips
- At night, the Koalefant will be sleeping, and although it will wake up and run away if approached. The time the animal takes to perform this action, gives opportunity for a melee strike.
- As with anything that spawns resources, there is a chance for the loot to fall into water and be lost if dropped too close to seashore.
- Cornering the Koalefant can be difficult with varying land tile layouts, it's more reliable to trap it along a precipice. This can be done by herding the animal up against the obstruction, forcing it to run sideways along the edge. If the player is able to catch up with it fast enough, the Koalefant will remain stationary as it runs directly into the edge.
- Another killing method is to chase it into hostile Mobs such as mating Beefalos, Killer Bees, Tallbirds, etc.
- If one has an excess supply of Meat, the Koalefant can be guided to the base and kept for future use. As long as the Koalefant is alive, its Meat will never spoil, which is enough for making 4 Ham Bats. It will not despawn nor affect the future spawnings.
Trivia
- The name "Koalefant" is a portmanteau of "koala" and "elephant".
- When examined by Maxwell, he states: "It's a distant cousin of the Beefalo".
- According to Wickerbottom, its scientific name is Koalefanta proboscidea.
- A Koalefant can be chased into a pen to be kept as a pet. The Telelocator Staff and Telelocator Focus can also be used to achieve this.
Bugs
- Sometimes a Koalefant will not appear at the end of a trail, even though the player states that they found it.
- An unreachable Suspicious Dirt Pile can spawn in the ocean.
- A Suspicious Dirt Pile near the ocean can despawn while investigating it.
- A Koalefant may spawn in (or be able to walk on) the ocean, making them unreachable with melee weapons.
- Suspicious Dirt Piles layer incorrectly when directly behind the pole of a Touch Stone. Once investigated, the track will be placed correctly.
