–Wurt
Knobbly Trees are Plants exclusive to Don't Starve Together and introduced in the Waterlogged beta. They can be found in the Waterlogged biome. They can be grown from Knobbly Tree Nuts and can be chopped down with any Axe; a basic Axe will need 10 swings to cut it.
The Growth stages take 3 days from planting to short, and 4 days for each other phase. They go from short (no mossy patch) to medium form (with a mossy patch and one lowest branch), to a tall form (with a mossy patch and two equally lowest branches). If Tree Jam is not applied to the tall form, it reverts back to the short form after 4 days and begins the cycle again.
Tree Jam can be used to force a Knobbly Tree to grow to its next phase. When going from short to medium to tall, Tree Jam instantly grows the tree to its next size. At the tall phase, applying Tree Jam permanently changes the tree so that it will never revert to an earlier phase. At this point, each application of Tree Jam makes the tree goopy for 4 days. After each goopy phase it grows an additional small pink flower: first one, then two, then three. The 4th goopy enrichment causes the 3-flowered tall Knobbly Tree to grow into an Above Average Tree Trunk after 4 days.
A Knobbly Tree takes at least 16 days of regular enrichment to grow into an Above-Average Tree Trunk. A short tree can still be grown into an Above-Average Tree Trunk in 16 days, but it requires 2 additional applications of tree jam to speed-grow it from short to medium, then medium to tall before beginning the time-consuming goopy phases.
Knobbly Tree Nut[]
–Wurt
Knobbly Tree Nuts are dropped from Great Tree Trunks after being rammed by a Boat. After 3 days in the water, a nut will grow into the Knobbly Tree's short stage. Knobbly Tree Nuts can be Hammered to yield a stick.
A Knobbly Tree Nut can be retrieved from the water by using a Pinchin' Winch. It can be dropped back into the water (at another location) from the Pinchin' Winch, or placed on boat to drop back in the water when the boat is destroyed. A Grass Raft disintegrates naturally, or can be hurried along by overloading a simple campfire without fear of burning the nut.
Above-Average Tree Trunk[]
–Wurt
A tall-phase Knobbly Tree enriched 4 times with Tree Jam over 16 or more days will become an Above-Average Tree Trunk (details in the Knobbly Tree section).
Similar to Great Tree Trunks, Above-Average Tree Trunks will spawn Mossy Vines (3 with a 33% chance of a 4th) and spread a canopy over the surrounding area (about 9 tiles wide/high by 7 tiles on the diagonal). While not as large as the Great Tree Trunks' canopy, the Above-Average Tree's canopy provides similar protection from wildfires in the Summer, reduces 35% Wetness from Rain, and eliminates Overheating (max temp under the leaves is 63). When struck by lightning or rammed with a boat, it drops several Twigs and Cut Grass (the lightning will not penetrate the canopy). Neither Great nor Above Average Trees are hurt by boats ramming them (the boats still suffer damage).
Unlike a Great Tree Trunk, the Above-Average trunk will not have Sea Strider Nests, Knobbly Tree Nuts, Grass Gators, or Fireflies. Whatever biome was under the tree when planted will still be there when it matures.
Above-Average Trees burn as quickly as any normal-sized tree and can be chopped down with 25 swings of a basic Axe. An Ice Flingomatic is a worthwhile insurance policy, as is a Lightning Rod to prevent strikes just outside the tree canopy from igniting things underneath.
Tips[]
- Planting the nuts every 10th tile orthoganally should yield mostly even coverage of the resulting shade.
