So you have plenty of mushrooms and you don't have any clue what to do with them?

Don't worry they can be a great support during your attempt not to starve ..

The different Mushrooms

First things first. There are three different types of Mushrooms. The first one is the Red Mushroom.

Red Mushroom:

Red 'shrooms

Red Mushrooms during Daytime

Red Mushrooms can be found in Grassland or Forest biomes and can be easily noticed and identified when looking at their red cap. They are only harvestable during Daytime because during night and dusk they will grave themselves underneath the earth. Such a "sunken" mushroom looks like the half of a scoop and can not be picked but only digged using a Shovel.

"sunken" Mushrooms

Digging a sunken mushroom respectively its "hole" will drop 2 Caps but it will also prevent any other mushrooms from growing at this particular location. If not digged, a mushroom will regrow shortly after the next Rain

Green Mushroom

Green Mushrooms during Dusk

The second mushroom is the Green one. You may encounter it in ForestsSavannas and Marshes.Unlike its Red relative the green cap can not be picked during Day or Night but only when it's Dusk. Just like the Red Mushroom they grow back when there was Rain.

Blue Mushroom

Blue 'shrooms

Blue Mushrooms during Night

Last but not least we have the Blue Mushroom. It typically appears in Forests and Marshes. While red caps have to be picked at Day and green ones at Dusk, the blue cap must obviously be picked at Night. It will regrow once it has Rained

Mushtrees

Mushtrees are organisms that can only be found in Caves. Mushtrees are, as their name indicates, a weird mixture between Mushrooms and Trees. Unlike "normal" mushrooms, these trees cannot be picked or digged but have to be chopped with an Axe. Upon being chopped they will drop different loot depending on which kind of Mushtree it was. Since there exist three types of mushrooms there also exist three different kinds of Mushtrees, the first one being the Red Mushtree the second one being the Green Mushtree and the third one being the Blue Mushtree. When a mushtree is set on fire it will burn to a crisp and then disappear dropping one Ash and Charcoal. In addition to that all mushtrees provide light.

Red Mushtree

When being chopped the Red Mushtree drops one Log and a Red Cap.

Green Mushtree

The Green Mushtree will drop one Log and one Green Cap.

Blue Mushtree

Since the blue Mushtree obviously is the biggest Mushtree it is reasonable that it drops two logs instead of one, in addition to a blue cap.

Usage

All mushrooms are considered Vegetables. They have a food Value of 0.5 so they can be used for Crock Pot Recipes as a complement or filler.

Red Mushroom ("Red Cap")

  • Can be used for hunting Gobblers pretty well: Simply place a Red Cap somewhere near a Gobbler and wait until it eats the cap. As you can see above eating a uncooked red mushroom will decrease the Health  of any creature by 20. Since Gobblers have 50 HP, eating 2 raw red caps will kill them.
  • Best used as a filler for Crock Pot Recipes because its effects are in general rather negative

Examples: any recipe that requires vegetables.

Note: You can use any type of mushroom uncooked and cooked for the recipes above.

Green Mushroom ("Green Cap")

  • Can be a good completion to the raw mushroom

Blue Mushroom ("Blue Cap")

  • Has the most positive effects when raw, can come in handy to increase Health as well as Hunger
  • Slighty increases your Sanity  and is therefore another possibility to counteract the raw Green Mushroom

Tips and Hints

  • Mushrooms are outstanding for decreasing your Sanity in order to farm Nightmare Fuel. The best way to use them is to have couple of one that noticeably decreases your sanity, such as the raw green mushroom and another one to increase your sanity or your Health when the situation gets out of control and too dangerous. A good choice can be cooked green caps or raw blue caps.
  • Additionally all mushrooms are considered Vegetables and have a Food value of 0.5. You can use them as vegetables in the Crock Pot. In this case the Red Mushroom is pretty handy because in raw condition its only positive effect is the one on your hunger, but since farming them requires a fairly high investment of time (see above: "regrows shortly after it rains") you should just use this mushrooom for your food on occasion ...
  • Another problem with farming mushrooms is that they spoil very fast, so the best way to use them is to have some near your base to collect them every now and then, or to mark their locations on the map by simply placing Signsthe BackpackTreesSaplingsGrass, and other stuff.
  • Like most of the other plants (although mushrooms aren't actually plants, I know), mushrooms do not regrow during winter
  • You should think twice before digging a mushroom. Was eliminating the mushroom spawner forever worth the two caps? You should only make use of this option when it's unavoidable or you're in need of the particular mushroom

  • Eating an uncooked Blue Mushroom gives you -15 Sanity and +20 Health. Eating a cooked Green Mushroom however gives you +15 Sanity and -1 Health. If you have stacks of these, quick passaging through Obelisks shouldn't be a problem any more.
