Gnome is one of the Gravedigger Items that can be dug from a Grave with a Shovel at a 3.75% chance. Its only use is trading it with Pig King for 5 Gold Nuggets.
The Gnome can also be obtained by finding the area in which the Box Thing spawns, therefore it isn't a hard item to acquire.

- Wilson, Ms. Wickerbottom, and Willow believe that the gnome is some kind of religious artifact, which is surprisingly true. A garden gnome's original purpose was to protect ones garden from evil spirits or attract real gnomes.( Also scandinavian variant of gnomes can be considered as a religious or just mythological figure). Nowadays they are merely decorative.
