The Gnat Swarm is a Mob exclusive to the Hamlet DLC, which spawns from Gnat Mounds.
Behavior
It takes the form of a swarm of bugs that will chase and attach itself to the player character's head. While attached, it will decrease the player's sanity and deal 1 damage periodically (perhaps beginning after a wait period of 30 seconds). It will follow the player until it finds a new target.
The swarm isn't a status effect, but is an actual entity that is flying around the player. When force attacking, the swarm can only be hit if there are no other targets around.
Attacking them directly won't deal any damage, possibly because they are not a single entity but a swarm and therefore can dodge attacks quickly.
If a Gnat Mound is destroyed, the swarm will spawn a new mound after some time, similar to Moleworms.
Tips
- At dusk/night, swarms will be attracted to non-fire light sources such as Thunderbirds, Pig houses, and glowflies, and can be driven away this way. Be careful however, if you're playing as an overcharged WX, you will shine brighter then these sources, and therefore this method won't work.
- Swarms can be frozen with an ice staff and subsequently attacked normally.
- A cloud of Bug B' Gone spray will instantly vaporize the swarm.
- Leading a swarm into the Gas Rainforest will destroy it instantly.
