The Orange Gem is only found in the Ruins. It is used to craft The Lazy Forager, which automatically collects items, and The Lazy Explorer, which teleports you a short distance.

Orange Gems are obtained by mining Ancient Statues, destroying Broken Clockworks, breaking certain Relics, opening Ornate Chests, and hammering Ancient Pseudoscience Stations.
Reign of Giants
In the Reign of Giants DLC there is an alternative method of getting Orange Gems, by destroying Tumbleweed.
