Sure beats the heat. And darkness.

The Endothermic Fire is a craftable Light Tab Structure introduced in the Reign of Giants DLC. It requires a Science Machine to prototype and costs 2 Nitre and 3 Cut Grass to craft.

An Endothermic Fire provides light and cools the player. It can be fueled with the same items as a regular fire (see Fuel), in addition to Nitre. An Endothermic Fire is unable to cook food. When burnt out, it drops Ashes.

Temporarily building an Ice Box to cool Thermal Stone is cheaper and more effective. Moving an Ice Box only costs 1 gold. A Thermal Stone cooled using Ice Box is also cooled to a lower temperature compared to Endothermic Fire, allowing the Thermal Stone to remain cooler.

I could watch it for hours, even though it's cold.

The Endothermic Fire Pit is the permanent version of the Endothermic Fire. It requires an Alchemy Engine to prototype and costs 2 Nitre, 4 Cut Stone, and 2 Electrical Doodads to craft.

Endothermic Fire Pit is more fuel-efficient than the Endothermic Fire. Each fuel item burns as long as they would in a Fire Pit, which is twice as long as the burn time in a Campfire or Endothermic Fire.

Swapping Thermal Stone from Ice Box has a cheaper maintenance and is more effective. There is no Night Hand, no fueling requirement. The character is no longer tethered to the Endothermic Fire Pit while cooling down and free up equipment slots from insulation clothing. Thermal Stone cooled using Ice Box is also cooled to a lower temperature compared to Endothermic Fire Pit, allowing the Thermal Stone to remain cooler.

Endothermic Fires and Endothermic Fire Pits are also included in the Shipwrecked DLC, where they can be used to deal with Overheating during the Dry Season. They work exactly as they do in the Reign of Giants DLC.

Prototype.png Tips[]

  • An Ice Flingomatic will attempt to put out an Endothermic Fire the same way it does with regular fires.

Placeholder.png Trivia[]

  • In thermodynamics, the term endothermic describes a process that absorbs heat energy from its surroundings, "endo" meaning 'inner' as in "going into" thus "absorbing", while the term exothermic is the opposite, "exo" meaning "outer", as in "coming out of" thus "dispersing".
  • The Endothermic Fire is blue, meant to represent a lack of heat, but in reality, blue flames are hotter than yellow flames.
