Dogfish are passive Mobs found in the Shipwrecked DLC. They can be seen across the Ocean on their own, or in abundance in Coral Reefs. When the player's boat approaches a Dogfish's shadow, it will surface and attempt to swim away, before retreating to the water once more. Dogfishes are only spawned at world creation time, and they do not respawn once killed, making them a limited resource. They are considered innocent creatures, and killing one adds 2 points to the player's Naughtiness level, which can cause Krampus to appear.

–Wheeler, when examining a Dead Dogfish.
When a Dogfish is killed, it becomes a Dead Dogfish. It can be eaten to restore 1 and 25 . Dead Dogfish can be cooked in the Crock Pot and counts as 0.5 units of Meat and 1 unit of Fish. Cooking a Dead Dogfish at a Campfire, Fire Pit, Chiminea, or Dwarf Star will yield Fish Steak. It can also be dried to get Jerky and can be traded to Yaarctopus for Dubloons. When a Dead Dogfish is left to spoil, it will turn into a Spoiled Fish. Placing a Dead Dogfish inside normal or fat Packim Baggims will cause him to eat it and spit out a Spoiled Fish.
Hunting
Dogfish swim fairly fast and will avoid the player. They can be killed easily using a Spear Gun, a normal Spear thrown by the Spear Gun deals enough damage to kill the Dogfish in a single shot for characters without reduced damage modifiers. Alternatively, they can be chased towards a shore and cornered there, allowing them to be killed with melee Weapons.
Below is the number of hits it takes with each weapon to kill a Dogfish when playing with characters with a default damage modifier. The Weather Pain is not included due to the random nature of its projectile.

It takes 2 blasts to freeze a Dogfish with an Ice Staff. It takes 1 Sleep Dart to put Dogfish to sleep.
Usage
Tips
- Abigail can outrun a Dogfish, and given enough time can kill it. To reduce the time needed, this is best attempted at dusk or night.
- Woodlegs can use The 'Sea Legs's unlimited cannon to kill Dogfishes easily. Players should keep in mind that the cannon shot will create big Waves that will cause Wetness and damage The 'Sea Legs' if they aren't dodged.
Trivia
- According to Wickerbottom's quote ("Canis Fishus"), the Dogfish is a dog-like creature (like wolves, foxes, etc) that looks like a fish and not a fish that looks like a dog.
- It should be noted that the cartilaginous fish family Squalidae are commonly called dogfish, though are not related to the ones seen in the game.
