Webber Portrait
Maybe it needs some chicken soup?

Webber, when examining a Diseased Berry Bush.

Disease is a feature that affects replanted Plants in Don't Starve Together, introduced in A New Reign. Diseased plants will appear to be surrounded by flies and become darker in color before dying and disappearing. They do not drop their specific resources, but instead yield Rot if being picked or dug up by the player with a Shovel.

Gears Mechanics

After a plant has been replanted by the player, it will have a timer set somewhere between 30-70 days. Once that timer is up, it has a 10% chance to become diseased. If the chance fails, the timer is reset to another value between 30-70 days and the process will repeat itself. If it's successful, the character will comment when harvesting the plants for 4-6 days to warn the player that the plant will become diseased. If it turns fully diseased, it will begin to spread to other nearby replanted crops every 1.5-2.5 days with no warning. The player can dig up the plant in its warning phase in order to manually reset the timer, or at the very least if it's too late and the plant's already diseased, the player should dig up the plant to prevent it from spreading, but the diseased plant will be destroyed in the process.

The following table illustrates the variants available for each type of resource, note that the sources on bold are invulnerable to Disease:

Resource Type Grass Twigs Berries Stone Fruit
Plant Variant Grass Gekko Grass Tuft Sapling Twiggy Tree Berry Bush Juicy Berry Bush Stone Fruit Bush Planted

Placeholder Trivia

  • Disease was added to the game way before A New Reign was announced, becoming part of the latter after the Beta release with some tweaks. Before that, Grass Gekkos and Twiggy Trees were also able to become diseased.
  • There are unused sprites for Diseased Logs, Juicy Berries and the dug version of each plant in the game's files.
