The Deadly Brightshade is a Mob exclusive to Don't Starve Together, introduced within the From Beyond updates. They appear when Brightshade Gestalts take over Plants, which appear from Rifts.

Maxwell, when examining a Tunneling Vine

Deadly Brightshades attack by spawning a single Tunneling Vine, which will weave in and out of the ground towards nearby players or other targets. While the Tunneling Vine is alive, the main body of the plant will retaliate upon taking damage, dealing 100 standard damage and 30 Planar Damage to anything close to it and cause a large Knockback, (except for other Brightshades and Tunneling Vines) that also dismounts any player riding a beefalo.

Tunneling Vines have 200 HP. When tunneling, they will sometimes leave behind a much larger segment of vine that cannot attack, but can be damaged. When the Tunneling Vine is destroyed, its corresponding Brightshade's bud will open and it will not retaliate for 9 seconds. The Brightshade will begin shaking after roughly 5 seconds have passed. After 9 seconds have passed, the Brightshade will immediately retaliate, close (and thus retaliate if attacked) and spawn another Tunneling Vine.

Both Deadly Brightshades and their Tunneling Vines have Planar Entity Protection, and thus physical damage are less effective against them. In contrast, the planar damage and other damage sources are fully effective. For example, a Brightshade Sword will deal 32.99 physical damage and 30 planar damage to them instead of 38 and 30 respectively.

When killed, a Deadly Brightshade drops 2 Brightshade Husk and 2 Leafy Meat.

Prototype Tips[]

  • Neither the Deadly Brightshade nor the Tunneling Vine will drop Souls for Wortox.
  • Because the retaliation effect has a short range, ranged weapons such as Blow Darts, Walter's Trusty Slingshot, or Howlitzer can damage the main plant without fearing of retaliation.
    • The range of long-reach melee weapons, such as Tail o' Three Cats and Alarming Clock, is not far enough to safely stay out of the Brightshade's retaliation range.
  • The retaliation effect will damage any mob nearby, potentially turning aggressive mobs against the Deadly Brightshade. Large numbers of mobs with weak individual attacks such as Bees will die quickly, but large mobs with slow high-damage attacks such as Treeguards can fight effectively against the Brightshade if the player pits them against each other.
  • Because the Brightshade deals a large amount of Planar Damage, care should be taken when fighting the Brightshade, especially characters with low HP, such as Maxwell or an old Wanda.
  • Brightshade Armor set obtained after defeating a few Deadly Brightshades can drastically reduce the damage Deadly Brightshades do, while the Brightshade Sword allow partially piercing their planar entity protection.
    • Shadow Reaper will (While wearing Void Cowl) fully stack its additional damage while killing the Tunneling Vine, after which it will remain fully stacked against the Brightshade, meaning that players with any damage amp or allies attacking the Brightshade are capable of killing it after killing just one Tunneling Vine. The Reaper will remain stacked against other vines as well, which makes it a perfect weapon for dispatching groups of Brightshades.
  • Because planar entity protection increases in effectiveness the stronger a hit is, a full stack (40) of Gunpowder is not enough to instantly kill a Deadly Brightshade.
