“Snicker-snack!”
The Dark Sword is a high-tier magic melee weapon. It requires a Shadow Manipulator to prototype, and costs 5 Nightmare Fuel and 1 Living Log to craft. The Dark Sword does 68 damage per hit and has 100 uses. It also drains Sanity by 20/minute while equipped. It is also one of Maxwell's starting items in all games but Don't Starve Together.
The Dark Sword is the strongest melee weapon in the game in terms of reliable, player-dealt damage. It can be usedto fight any Mob in the game. Due to their perks, the Dark Sword proves the most useful when wielded by Wolfgang, Maxwell and Wigfrid.
Trivia
- The Dark Sword was added in the Insanity! update. Until the A Little Rain Must Fall update, the cost of crafting was 1 Twig. The Dark Sword may have only been a stick changed by the character's imagination, similar to Night Armour.
- Upon examining the Dark Sword, Maxwell will say "snicker-snack!" This is a reference to Lewis Caroll's poem "Jabberwocky," in which a person slays the Jabberwock with the Vorpal Blade, a weapon described to make a "snicker-snack" sound.
- The design of the Dark Sword appears to be a combination of Nightmare Fuel's visual elements and shape of a cutlass, a sword stereotypically used by pirates.
