Cut Grass is a renewable resource Item harvested from Grass Tufts and other sources found naturally in the world. It is one of the most critical early-game resources along with Twigs and Flint. A player who does not collect cut grass on their first day will not be able to craft a Torch or Campfire and will not survive the first night unless they find a firefly or other light source. Grass can be refined into Rope for more advanced recipes.
Downloadable Content[]
In all DLCs, more crafting recipes require Cut Grass. Cut Grass can also be gained from crops on a Farm that is destroyed by the heat during Summer or Dry Season. Grass Tufts wither during these seasons unless protected by an Ice Flingomatic or located in a Mangrove biome, reducing access to Cut Grass.
In the Reign of Giants DLC, Cut Grass drops from all Tumbleweeds, making it renewable even if the player burns all the spawned Grass Tufts.
In the Shipwrecked DLC, Cut Grass and Grass Tufts appear greener, however their function is identical. Cut Grass may be dropped by the Slot Machine when three carrots are rolled.
In the Hamlet DLC, Cut Grass is required to craft Lawn Turf and Beard Hair Rugs. It can be acquired by cutting down Tall Grass with a Machete, yielding 1 Cut Grass, or by clipping it with Shears, yielding 2 Cut Grass. It may also be dropped when Hammering A Smashing Pot.
Don't Starve Together[]
In Don't Starve Together, Cut Grass is used to craft Telltale Hearts, Flares, Wardrobes and Friendly Scarecrows. Winona uses Cut Grass to craft Trusty Tapes. In addition, it is also dropped by Grass Gators and Grass Gekkos (either startled or killed) and can be found in Ocean Debris. It is significantly less useful as Beefalo food, restoring only 4 and 4.6875 .
