Chester will spawn once the player finds the Eye Bone, which can be anywhere in a world, and only spawns once. If the eye bone is dropped back onto the ground, Chester will stop following the player and remain near it. This is useful for keeping chester somewhere if you wish for him to not follow you at the moment. If Chester happens to get killed, he will drop all of the items that you have stored inside him. But don't worry, he will respawn in 7 in-game days wherever the eye bone happens to be. Krampus cannot steal from him.

Caution when playing the character Wendy when her twin sister Abigail spawns at night.  Abigail will kill Chester just by bumping into it. Also, to store an Axe or a Pickaxe on Chester it is wise not to left-click him to open his chest, because the issued order will be "Attack".

Chester (short for Otto van Chesterfield) is a unique passive Mob that acts like a mobile chest. By right-clicking on Chester, you can store items inside of him (9 slots). As long as the Eye Bone is in the player's inventory, Chester will follow. Chester is one of the few mobs which cannot be frozen.

Trivia

 • Putting Fireflies in Chester will cause him to emit a faint light at night, just like a Chest.
 • When playing in adventure mode, Chester cannot be taken to the next area. Having the eyebone in your inventory will result in a pile ash that will not attract Chester in the next area resulting in any items that Chester had to be lost.
 • If the Eye bone is placed inside of chester he will stop following the player and will remain in place.

Exploits

 • Putting a Trap in Chester will show Chester as a trap on the map. This can allow the player to locate him on the overworld map, should he get lost.
