Bone Shards are an item obtained by hammering Skeletons. Bone Shards are used exclusively to craft the Saddlehorn.

Gift Icon Downloadable ContentEdit

In all DLCs, the player will leave a Skeleton where they died, thus making Bone Shards a renewable resource. However, the player needs to have a means of resurrecting themself in order to hammer the skeleton, otherwise the game will end.

In the Reign of Giants DLC, Bone Shards can also be obtained by hammering Bones, destroying Tumbleweeds, attacking Hound Mounds, or as vomited gifts from friendly Catcoons. They are used in several new crafting recipes, including the Bucket-o-poop, the Rain Hat, the Rain Coat and the Eyebrella.

In the Shipwrecked DLC, Bone Shards can be obtained by digging up X Marks the Spot treasure chests and by Hammering Spoiled Fish. Using a Trawl Net in the Deep Ocean also has a chance to yield Bone Shards. They are used in a variety of additional crafting recipes such as the Snakeskin Hat, the Snakeskin Jacket, the Captain Hat and the Pirate Hat.

Don't Starve Together icon Don't Starve TogetherEdit

In Don't Starve Together, Bone Shards are dropped after attempting to open the Loot Stash with the Deer Antler, causing Klaus and his two Gem Deer to spawn. Killing a No-Eyed Deer with an Antler has a 50% probability to drop a Bone Shard.

  • Bone Shards were first introduced in the Reign of Giants DLC and were also present in the Shipwrecked DLC. In the Quality of Life update, they were then retroactively added to the base game.
